Description

This is the only book solely about Jupiter's moon Io, the most volcanically active body in the solar system. Written by experts in the field, many of whom took part in the Galileo mission, the book reviews the basics about Io and its unique space environment. Coverage includes all subjects, where the Galilio mission has shed new light on, with some emphasis on Io's most remarkable characteristics: its active volcanism.

To the best of my knowledge this is the only book available solely dedicated to Jupiter's strange volcanic moon Io(Europa's probably volcanic as well, but with a planet wide ice sheet volanic activity would be harder to recogize). The hardest of the four larger moons to study, the Galileo mission had to wait until the end to get close---The environment at Io's orbit is deep within Jupiter's powerful magnetic field and is in constant bombardment by high radiation. The book neatly summarizes the best current knowledge about the moon. It is aimed at those of a techical level, but I believe that a reasonably knowledgable reader would also value the book. But it IS expensive, which is my main reason for 4 rather than five stars. This will not be a casual purchase.
