Description

A completely new edition of Taliaferro?s translation of the first three books of Apollonius?s Conics with all new diagrams. It is the only English translation of these books other than Heath?s out-of-print version which is a modernized retelling rather than a true translation. This 3rd Century BCE work displays astonishing virtuosity in the treatment of conic sections in the classical synthetic geometrical manner. It is the culmination of Greek geometry and, in turn, provided a basis for the work of modern mathematicians and scientists such as Vieta, Descartes, Kepler, and Newton. Includes many corrections to the old edition?s text, translation, and notes, all new diagrams, an index, a bibliography, and an introductory essay by Harvey Flaumenhaft. Design and layout make it easy to read and work with, with diagrams repeated on every spread, adequate space for notes, and high quality paper to prevent show-through.

This is essential reading for ancient-Greek-math-lovers (along Euclid and Archimedes) and for those stepping on the path towards the Scientific Revolution, especially if you plan to read Newton's Principa or Descartes' Geometry. As a prerequisite, you must definitely be reading Euclid's Elements first and keep a copy besides you at all times, as Conics is heavily dependent on it. If you did master the Elements successfully you don't have to worry. The geometry may seem daunting at first, but there aren't that many new and complicated ideas present to boggle your mind, just a thorough investigation of conic sections using euclidean principles. The present edition from Green Lion Press covers books I-III. Book IV is available from the same publisher as a separate volume. Still, books V-VII and book VIII from Conics are available as separate volumes from Springer and together they cost more than $300. It's a pity that there is no edition that covers all the material, but 4 different volumes instead. The editor has done a superb job on this one. High quality binding and paper that lasts, clear drawings repeated on every page of a proposition, and most importantly, a style that is inherent Greek, not modern.I've only read two books from this publisher, but the love they put into making them has made me go look for more. You can check out their site. I love them so much that even if I don't find a book published by them, I'll go and search for something that they recommend (like the Stillman Drake's translation of Galileo Two New Sciences in the preface to Newton's Principa: The Central Argument, published by them)Great content, great presentation. A must have.
