I grew up reading these and similar boys books of the period just before and a decade or so afterward. The early Hardy Boys and the Radio Boys series for example. The vocabulary seems very advanced and the sentences formal today, but it was really like that. High school books from the time show that, unlike the semi-literate school standards today. Even in my 1954 English Reader, from my sixth grade days, is comparable to sophomore college reading levels today. Read these books and improve your English fluency, and enjoy great stories as well. I recommend this series especially to rail fans, model railroaders, and those studying our culture of the time. Steam, coal and steel built and connected the country, fueled also by tough as well as brave men. These were the days before snow tunnel sheds, modern car couplers, with hand brakes still in evidence, and rail lines linking town and city.
