I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Ms. Stout (now deceased, I understand) wrote of her stroll through life, in which her gardening played a large role. She makes no pretense of being an expert, but her humble descriptions of what she did and why she did them exhibit a very perceptive mind and a lifetime of patience trying to tease out of her garden the wisdom of how to get the best results with the least amount of effort. Much of her slowly developed wisdom that today is taken for granted was developed by her years of patient trial and error in the garden. I don't know whether she was the ultimate original resource by which the gardening world learned the lessons she taught, or whether the same lessons were independently developed by others … I suspect the latter, but that does not detract from her accomplishment. Her book is out of print, but I bought copies for 2 of my gardening daughters from used book sellers … and they certainly will be pleased reading this charming, almost biographical account.
